Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree: Complete Boss Strategy Guide — All 10 Remembrance Fights
Shadow of the Erdtree’s boss roster is the most demanding lineup FromSoftware has ever shipped. This guide covers every Remembrance fight — no filler, no “just dodge” advice — with exact Scadutree targets, build recommendations, and punish windows.
Before you start: Scadutree math
Scadutree Blessing is a multiplicative damage-and-defense scalar that only works inside the DLC. Every fragment matters exponentially more than a level-up past 150. The formula:
| Blessing Level | Damage Multiplier | Defense Multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 1.00× | 1.00× |
| 5 | 1.35× | 1.30× |
| 10 | 1.75× | 1.60× |
| 15 | 2.00× | 1.80× |
| 20 | 2.10× | 1.90× |
Minimum viable blessing for each boss is listed below — go in lower and you are doing a challenge run.
Divine Beast Dancing Lion
- Location: Belurat, Tower Settlement
- Recommended Blessing: 4+
- Optimal Build: Any melee with Strike damage
Phase 1: Four elements cycle in fixed order — Lightning → Wind → Frost → Fire. Each phase adds one new attack. The safest punish is after the Lightning ground-slam (3-hit combo with a long recovery).
Phase 2: Gains a hybrid form at 50% HP that cycles all elements rapidly. Stay close to the rear legs — the breath attacks track poorly at this range.
Key punish: After the spinning multi-hit combo, the Lion always pauses for 2.5 seconds. This is your only guaranteed charged-heavy window.
Rellana, Twin Moon Knight
- Location: Castle Ensis
- Recommended Blessing: 6+
- Optimal Build: Fast weapons (curved swords, thrusting swords); magic defense talisman
Phase 1: Standard Carian knight moveset. The double moon slam has a deceptively long hitbox — dodge into the sword, not away.
Phase 2 (50% HP): Twin Moon Greatsword AoE. She channels for 3 seconds before the blast. This is a DPS check, not a dodge check — if you cannot burst 15% of her HP during the channel, she executes the full arena-wide blast (survivable at 60 Vigor with Magic Fortification).
Key punish: After the Carian Greatsword sweep, she always follows with a thrust — parry window is generous (frames 8-16).
Messmer the Impaler
- Location: Shadow Keep
- Recommended Blessing: 12+
- Optimal Build: Bleed (rivers of blood, dual scavenger curved swords); fire defense talisman +3
Phase 1: Fire + spear thrusts. Every combo ends with either an overhead slam (sidestep → charged R2) or the snake-summon grab (roll backward twice).
Phase 2 (40% HP): Messmer transforms, gaining serpent attacks and an arena-wide fire tornado. Hug the outer wall — the tornado’s inner radius does less damage. The serpent bite is the only consistent punish window in phase 2.
Key punish: Phase 1 only — after the 5-hit flame spear combo, he stands still for 1.8 seconds. Phase 2 removes this window entirely.
Consort Radahn (Final Boss)
- Location: Enir-Ilim
- Recommended Blessing: 16-18
- Optimal Build: Greatshield + Bleed thrusting weapon, or Impenetrable Thorns for casters
Phase 1: Radahn’s moveset is 80% identical to Starscourge Radahn, but 40% faster. The gravity pull → slam is the only safe heal window.
Phase 2 (60% HP): Miquella joins. Every attack now has a delayed Holy afterimage. The new light-beam spam is unreactable at close range — maintain mid-distance or use Vow of the Indomitable on a shield.
The nuke: At ~20% HP, Radahn leaps into the sky for a 4-hit meteor combo. Sprint perpendicular to his trajectory, then dodge the final impact late — the tracking adjusts at the last frame.
Cheese strat: Antspur Rapier + Fingerprint Stone Shield + Scarlet Rot + Bleed. Hold block, poke, reapply. It is slow but consistent.
The remaining Remembrance fights (Romina, Midra, Bayle, Commander Gaius, Putrescent Knight, Scadutree Avatar) follow similar principles: identify the 1-2 punish windows per phase, stack relevant elemental defense, and never enter a boss room at less than the recommended Scadutree Blessing.
Pre-fight preparation checklist and their counters
Shadow of the Erdtree bosses fall into three archetypes. Aggression bosses (Messmer, Rellana, Divine Beast) punish passivity — they have fast combos and gap closers that catch players rolling backward. Counter with high-poise weapons and aggression of your own. Gimmick bosses (Putrescent Knight, Metyr) have specific weak points or phase mechanics; the fight is a puzzle, not a DPS race. Field bosses (Death Knights, Furnace Golems) are endurance tests with massive health pools; bring status effects like Bleed or Frostbite to cut through their HP efficiently.
Scadutree Blessing: the hidden difficulty slider
Your Scadutree Blessing level is the most important number in the DLC, more impactful than your Vigor or weapon upgrade level. At Blessing 0, even trash mobs in the Gravesite Plain hit like endgame bosses. At Blessing 12+, the same enemies are manageable. The optimal route: collect Scadu Fragments aggressively before challenging any major boss. ### Recommended boss order
The Cerulean Coast, Charo’s Hidden Grave, and the Shadow Keep all contain clusters of fragments reachable without fighting a remembrance boss. A Blessing level of 12-15 makes the DLC feel balanced; anything below 10 turns every encounter into a challenge run.
Pre-fight preparation checklist
Before entering any Shadow of the Erdtree remembrance boss, run this checklist. Confirm your Scadutree Blessing level meets the recommended benchmark (see below). Ensure you have at least 14 Crimson Flask charges at +12 reinforcement. Equip the appropriate defensive talismans — Dragoncrest Greatshield for physical bosses, Pearldrake for elemental. Bring the Mimic Tear +10 or Black Knife Tiche for their percentage-based damage and aggro drawing. Finally, clear the arena of any roaming enemies that could interfere during the fight.
Blessing level benchmarks per boss
A quick reference for Scadutree Blessing levels: Divine Beast Dancing Lion at level 5, Rellana Twin Moon Knight at level 7, Messmer the Impaler at level 10, Putrescent Knight at level 10, Romina Saint of the Bud at level 12, Commander Gaius at level 12, and the final boss at level 16 (do not attempt below 14). These are comfortable minimums, not challenge-run levels. Each additional blessing level reduces incoming damage by roughly 5%, so being even one level under the benchmark makes fights noticeably harder.
Recommended boss order
The Gravesite Plain bosses (Divine Beast, Rellana) are intended to be tackled first and reward exploration with early Scadutree Fragments. After clearing the Shadow Keep and defeating Messmer, the world opens up. The recommended order: Gravesite Plain → Scadu Altus → Shadow Keep (Messmer) → Cerulean Coast (Putrescent Knight, optional) → Rauh Ruins (Romina) → Hinterlands. This route ensures your Blessing level keeps pace with boss difficulty and prevents the frustration of encountering a boss you are 8+ levels under for.
